Keep Stirring the Pot

A Field Note for the Urban Monastic
Cook. Serve. Pray. Repeat.

TUESDAY WISDOM:
“We keep serving the stew. Even when the story is slow. Even when no one claps.”

Tuesdays at the table feel different. The weekend energy is gone. Monday’s charge has faded. And what you’re left with is the slow, ordinary, sacred work—chopping onions, stirring sauce, listening deep, and choosing to show up again.

That’s what Cook Serve Pray is.
Not a flashy ministry. Not a platform. Not a quick hit of good deeds.
It’s slow, intentional presence.
It’s a rhythm. A posture. A way of living that says, I’m not here to impress. I’m here to stay.

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” – Galatians 6:9 (ESV)

A Story from the Street Table:

Recently on an outreach , I served some chilli in a housing estate. Nothing dramatic happened—no sudden conversions, no miracles. But a man named Carl asked for seconds and told me it was the first time in three days someone had looked him in the eye. I handed him another cup and said, “You’re seen, bro. Not just by me—but by God.”
He smiled. Just a little. Then asked if we’d be back next week.

That’s it. That’s the work.
It’s not loud. It’s not easy.
But it’s faithful.

Reflect:

  • Where in your life is the work unseen but still worth doing?

  • Who around you needs a second helping of kindness?

  • What does it look like to serve without needing recognition?

Prayer for the Table Builders:

God of the everyday,
Give me patience when the work is slow,
Compassion when my heart grows hard,
And joy when no one claps or notices.
Let me love like You—with open hands and no agenda.
May my kitchen be a sanctuary.
May my service be worship.
Amen.

Urban Monastic Practice:

Serve Someone Quietly Today.
Don’t post it. Don’t tag it. Just do it.
– Drop a meal off.
– Text a prayer.
– Listen longer than feels comfortable.
– Show up again, even if nothing changes.

This is the ministry of the mundane. The holiness of habit.
This is the rule of the apron—we keep stirring the pot even when no one’s watching.
